Music for Zambia!
The VO Orchestra's Principal Harpist Heidi Krutzen has been in the news lately!
Heidi, along with colleague Jocelyn Banyard, has been doing work in Zambia on behalf of Malambo Grassroots, a society they've created that fosters education, village health and income generation for women. While they were in Zambia last year, Heidi heard about the Ngomo Academy, a school that was trying to teach western music but lacked the means to do so.
When Heidi got back to Vancouver, she contacted her colleagues here at Vancouver Opera and several other music groups. The result: 126 musical instruments, all on a ship bound for Africa. The instruments should arrive in March and Heidi will be there to receive them and hand them out to the lucky children.
Heidi was interviewed on CBC's As It Happens last night - you can listen to it here. There was also an interview with Heidi in Monday's Vancouver Sun. And here's where you can find out more about Malambo Grassroots.
