Nixon's Life After Vancouver

Terry Harper
Director of Production
With Production Carpenter Scott Ellis in tow, I went down to Missouri to load in the set of Nixon in China for the Lyric Opera of Kansas City, who have rented the production we created. We've been working on this rental for over a year now.
Director Michael Cavanagh had already been there for a few weeks rehearsing with the cast.

Kansas City's Nixon will be staged in the brand new Kauffman Center for Performing Arts, which just opened a few months ago This will be only the second opera in that building since its grand opening in November.

The load-in went well, and the set arrived with only a few dings of road rash from the over 2000 mile trip in two 53' tractor trailors. It actually arrived a month early, and went right into the opera scenic shop to add a few enhancements by San Francisco Opera (SFO). SFO will be mounting the production this summer. So, at the end of the Kansas City run, the set, props, and costumes will be going right from Kansas City to San Francisco.

I am in talks with the Victoria Opera of Melbourne, Australia trying to work out a rental there early next year. Keep your fingers crossed!

Here are a few shots from Kansas City:

The Kauffman Center. Recognize the style of the sculptures? They're by Jun Kaneko,
who designed VO's most recent production of Madama Butterfly.

Here's Scott Ellis, VO's Production Carpenter.
