Shopping At Renzullo

I found myself shopping again today at Renzullo Food Market, 1370 Nanaimo St (near 1st Ave).

Renzullo Food Market
Today it was their wonderful crostini (that’s what the market calls the mixture itself, so nobody correct me on my use of the word…), a baguette to slather it on, and their eggplant appetizer, all for a dinner I’m hosting this evening.

And while there, why not pick up a made-on-the-spot mortadella sandwich for lunch?  Oh yes, and how about some roasted garlic?  Marinated squid?  A chunk of grana padano?

I bought a friend a panettone at Renzullo for Christmas, and he reported that it was the best he’d ever had – and he’s had a few!
Look out for Befana!

I went to Italy – Bologna – to study Italian for three months a few years ago, arriving in Bologna over the holiday season.

The panettoni were pretty much out of the stores or at a reduced price by then, and taking their place was Befana - an old woman who delivers gifts to children throughout Italy on Epiphany Eve (the night of January 5) similar to another tradition of Santa Claus.

She fills children’s’ stockings with candy and presents if they are good or a lump of coal or dark candy if they are bad.  I guess I’ll be checking out Renzullo and other wonderful Italian markets in the area for Befane next January.
